Eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 11)

The Andean Community is the intergovernmental integration organization of Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. These countries are considered some the most diverse and rich countries in flora and fauna species. Taking into account this richness, the Andean Countries have developed policy instruments such as the regional Biodiversity Strategy and the Andean Environmental Agenda 2012 - 2016, that today guide the regional actions related to environmental management and represent the mandate and the main framework to formulate and implement this Programme. In line with the three objectives of the CBD, SGCAN together with the Andean Countries is implementing the Regional Programme BioCAN aimed to strengthen in an integrated manner existing regional experiences and promote proper models of sustainable management of Amazon biodiversity. BioCAN implementation strategy integrates the following levels: Regional level: Targeted to the development of technical tools and methodologies adapted to the Amazon region reality and the construction of proposals of regional guidelines and policies. National-Amazonian level: Activities oriented to the strengthening of existing experiences and the interaction among actors involved in biodiversity management in the Amazon Region. It is expected that regional policies and guidelines generated by the Programme offer proposals for the implementation of biodiversity management tools that contribute to the Amazon sustainable development agenda, specially to those issues related to sustainable management of biodiversity, equitable distribution of benefits and information management.
