Side Event
TIPPING TOWARDS SUSTAINABILITY: APPLYING RESILIENCE THINKING IN BIODIVERSITY GOVERNANCE
Organizer
UNDP, STOCKHOLM RESILIENCE CENTRE
Date and Time
15 October 2012 13:15 - 14:45
Meeting
Eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 11)
In this side event, UNDP and the Resilience and Development Programme (SwedBio) at Stockholm Resilience Centre will present the concept of “resilience” in relation to the objectives of the CBD. Enhancing ecosystem resilience is one of the Aichi Biodiversity Targets, and is critical to prevent ecosystems reaching tipping points at which globally valuable biodiversity is lost, and societies are unable to continue relying on the goods and services provided by functioning ecosystems, particularly in the face of climate change and desertification. The side event will present case studies and insights on how effective biodiversity and ecosystem management can strengthen the resilience of social-ecological systems that are exposed to shocks and disturbances such as climate variability, floods or droughts. UNDP considers principles of resilience as essential for promoting sustainable development in a world where many interlinked systems are approaching tipping points. UNDP supports countries to combine and sequence funding to promote an integrated approach to resilient ecosystems underpinning resilient communities. SwedBio is funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) as a knowledge interface working for resilient ecosystem management and governance, and to support policy development in developing countries for sustainable use of biodiversity and for poverty reduction.
