Launch of a report on The Ecosystem Valuation and Biodiversity Services of shade grown coffee in the Western Ghats of South India . The report, prepared by GIST Advisory Services, focuses on the the value provided by this unique shade-grown coffee sector to the forest ecosystem and the livelihoods that are dependant on it. The Coffee Ecosystems and Biodiversity Impacts study assesses the interlinkages between shade-grown coffee practices in representative areas of Karnataka and the extent of their contribution to maintaining and enhancing ecosystem services and local socio-economic development. This is a vital question as the Western Ghats are a critical global biodiversity hotspot and any evident adverse impacts of climate change on coffee or degradation of ecosystem services in the region can have significant effects on the continued preservation of the Western Ghats, human welfare in the area and wildlife conservation. The study has been commissioned by CSM and Karnataka Growers Federation (an association of 50,000 small to medium coffee farmers). GIST Advisory is the lead research partner of this study. The report will be introduced by Pavan Sukhdev, Founder-CEO of GIST Advisory, who was earlier Special Adviser and Head of UNEP’s Green Economy Initiative.
