UNEP/DRC has held a series of discussions with the CBD Secretariat to explore opportunities for developing synergies between CBD and UNEP in South-South Cooperation at strategic and operational levels. Linking centers of excellence and UNEP’s South-South Cooperation Exchange Mechanism was identified as a key activity that could be pursued to develop and strengthen the desired collaboration and synergies. The secretariat is mandated to engage in a process towards establishing a capacity-building network of national and regional centres of excellence which have been identified as key partners to support the implementation of SSC initiatives in response to WGRI-4. UNEP’s SSC Exchange Mechanism is an online platform that facilitates information sharing, partnership building and networking for SSC. Cooperation between these two initiatives is therefore is seen as priority in the on-going efforts to strengthen partnerships between UNEP and the CBD Secretariat. SCBD and UNEP propose to jointly organize a side-event at CBD COP11 in October, in Hyderabad, India. The focus of the side event is to introduce UNEP’s South-South Cooperation Exchange Mechanism to CBD Parties and partners and to discuss collaborative strategies and activities for the implementation of the Multi-Year Plan of Action for South-South Cooperation on Biodiversity for Development.
