Support from: European Commission (Transatlantic MPA networks project), FFEM

Objectives: Show the value and the role of networks of MPA managers at different levels (regional, sub-regional, national, or thematic) to accelerate the progress towards the qualitative aspects of Aïchi target 11, mainly the effective management of MPAs. Highlight the initiative of a common strategy among different regional and national networks at transatlantic level and the potential to enlarge this approach worldwide.

Short description of the event 

1. Networks of MPA managers help to achieve MPA effective management; a sample of actions and activities implemented by the networks will be showcased;

  • Capacity-building & management tools: CaMPAM (Training of Trainers programme and collaboration with OSPAR), NAMPAN (vulnerability assessment tool)
  • Harmonized monitoring for mobile species : MedPAN
  • Small projects financing : RAMPAO
  • Support to national policy implementation: French MPA Forum, French Biodiversity Agency, Fundación Biodiversidad (Spain)

2. Joint action among MPA networks

  • Call for joint action launched during IMPAC4 in 2017
  • EU Transatlantic MPA networks project. MPA partnership experiences across the Atlantic around marine mammal protection, coastal resilience and common strategy between networks of MPA managers. Potential for expanding the approach to other oceans.
