The “Expert Thematic Workshop on Landscape Approaches for the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework” was held as part of the post-2020 development process from 3–6 September 2019 in Kumamoto, Japan. The workshop was organized by the United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS) in cooperation with the CBD Secretariat, the Ministry of the Environment, Japan, and the Kumamoto Prefectural Government. The purpose of the workshop was to bring together policymakers, experts, stakeholders, indigenous peoples and local communities to explore how integrated landscape approaches – in terrestrial and coastal landscapes – can contribute to the effectiveness of the post-2020 framework, and to produce concrete recommendations as inputs to the framework development process.

This side event will present outcomes of the workshop and its recommendations for the Parties to incorporate landscape approaches in the post-2020 global biodiversity framework, with presentations from workshop participants and other experts on landscape approaches. Attention will be paid to incorporation of landscape approaches in NBSAPs, as well as implications for gender, nature-culture links, subnational policy, area-based conservation, coastal biodiversity, and other topics.
