In the lead-up to 2020, parties to multilateral environmental agreements, their secretariats as well as intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations get ready to pull on one string to establish an ambitious Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF). A challenge in implementing the GBF will be to secure high quality and timely information on the state of its implementation to allow decision makers at the national, regional and global levels to make informed decisions and guide the process throughout the next decade for its success.

The side event will introduce the Data Reporting Tool for MEAs (DaRT) and its value for managing, curating and sharing information at the national level for coherent reporting across MEAs. Concrete experiences of operationalizing DaRT at the national level in Cameroon, its use for compiling a national report and the benefits of using DaRT to this purpose are highlighted.

The event will shed more light on the potentials and challenges of the tool in contributing to the implementation of biodiversity-related MEAs towards the GBF and the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development.

A DaRT helpdesk will be available during the meeting, at which Parties can test the DaRT.

To attend the side event virtually, please register using the link provided in the tab "Links" above.

Looking forward to meeting you.

CBD/SBI/3/INF/8 The Data Reporting Tool for MEAs (DaRT) - A tool for biodiversity knowledge management in support of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework implementation

The United Nations Environment Programme has prepared the document in response to decision 14/25, paragraph 4(d) and (g), and decision 14/27, paragraph 3(g), in which the Conference of the Parties requested the Executive Secretary, subject to the availability of resources, to contribute to the development, testing and promotion of the Data Reporting Tool (DaRT, dart.informea.org), and to facilitate its use in reporting processes across the biodiversity-related conventions, as appropriate. 3. This document provides an overview of the DaRT, including its background, current development, guidance, and future plans, highlighting the benefits to Parties and stakeholders of the Multilateral Environmental Agreements as a tool that promotes synergies. 4. This document presents information relevant to agenda item 9 of the provisional agenda of the third meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Implementation, addressing mechanisms for reporting, assessment and review of implementation. It is also relevant to agenda item 10 on cooperation with other conventions, international organizations and initiatives, and agenda item 7, particularly with respect to knowledge management.

Data Reporting Tool for MEAs - DaRT

The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Data Reporting Tool for MEAs (DaRT) allows Parties to Multilateral Environment Agreements to gather and record data in a single space, for convenient sharing across Ministries and for national reporting; and to facilitate monitoring of progress toward the global goals and targets to which National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans are mapped. DaRT also brings together information from other tools and information sources – such as the Biodiversity Indicators Partnership – synthesising information, bridging gaps and improving efficiency.
