With just under eight years to create the transformative change needed to meet our planetary crises, the post-2020 global biodiversity framework (GBF) must be swiftly implemented in diverse countries around the world. An essential element of this will be operationalizing Target 1, which calls on countries to implement integrated spatial planning for land and seascapes. Bringing together Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the CBD Secretariat, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNDP), and the United Nations Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC), this side event will provide tangible tools and use cases exploring the use of spatial data for planning, implementation, and monitoring to operationalize Target 1 and facilitate rapid implementation of other targets of the GBF. Together, event partners will introduce the application of spatial planning tools for biodiversity and sustainable development, explore country case examples, and facilitate open dialogue across Parties to understand capacity and funding needs. Bringing together diverse voices from Colombia, Costa Rica, Uganda, CBD, UNDP, and UNEP-WCMC, the event will explore resources for: (1) Using spatial analyses such as Mapping Essential Life Support Areas and Nature Map for policy coherence; (2) Spatialized monitoring and reporting through UN Biodiversity Lab and other platforms; and (3) Applying spatial insights for protected and conserved areas planning, including the Aichi Biodiversity Target 11 Country Dossiers and the recently launched Creating a Nature-Positive Future report, which provide spatial and quality insights on protected and conserved areas to support decision makers in achieving 2030 goals for biodiversity and sustainable development. Each section of the agenda will provide an introduction to tools and resources available, showcase how they have been used by Parties around the world, and create space for discussion to draw on the knowledge of in-person and virtual participants. Through the use of informative lightning presentations, vivid use cases, and dynamic conversation, this side event will generate collaborations across Parties, implementing agencies, and other stakeholders to build a foundation for rapid implementation of the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework.
