CEBioS – ‘Capacities for Biodiversity and Sustainable Development’ – is a program financed by the Belgian Development Cooperation (DGD) and housed at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences (RBINS), where it belongs to the Operational Directorate ‘Natural Environment’ and more specifically the BioPolS group (Belgian Biodiversity Policy Support Group). CEBioS is a unique model assisting partner countries of the Belgian Development Cooperation to implement the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and its Aichi Targets.

First, we will present a sample of best practices and lessons learnt from 10 years Capacity Development in Africa, with some examples of Global Taxonomy Initiative, Monitoring-Reporting-Verification, Awareness, Habitat Monitoring and Clearing House Mechanism. All this also fits into our efforts to mainstream Biodiversity into the realm of development Cooperation and the Sustainable development Goals. 

A second part will be devoted to the presentation of 'EVAMAB': this 3-year project was financed by the Belgian Science Policy (BELSPO) to answer a research support asked by UNESCO, and coordinated/implemented by CEBioS and a consortium of Belgian and African Universities. It is a research project in support of the UNESCO-Man and the Biosphere Programme (UNESCO-MAB). Four Biosphere Reserves were chosen for testing Rapid Assessment methods for the Valuation of Ecosystem services: Pendjari National Park in Bénin, Mount Elgon N.P. in Uganda, Lake Manyara N.P. in Tanzania and Lake Tana in Ethiopia. This project resulted in a PRACTICAL MANUAL, published by UNESCO for the rapid assessment of ecosystem services in African Biosphere reserves, which was recently launched at APAC- Kigali. We will present this manual and have a Q&A session.

Guidance for the Assessment of Ecosystem Services in African Biosphere Reserves

For the first time, a specific, user-friendly manual dedicated to assess ecosystem services was created for biosphere reserve managers and decision-makers, and adapted to the African biosphere reserve context. Filling a gap in the Man and theBiosphere community and beyond, this manual will provide its readers with the necessary tools and knowledge to engage their communities in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals
