In its decision 14/25, the Conference of Parties requested the Executive Secretary to develop a knowledge management component as a part of the preparatory process for the post-2020 global biodiversity framework. Further SBI in its recommendation 3/10 on knowledge management and clearing-house mechanism urged Parties and other Governments, biodiversity related conventions and relevant actors to implement strategic actions outlined in the knowledge management component, complementary to the long-term strategic framework for capacity-building and proposal to strengthen technical and scientific cooperation to support the effective implementation of post 20202 global biodiversity framework and the national strategies and action plans.

To comply with the COP decision and SBI recommendations, The SCBD is planning a Knowledge Management for Biodiversity (KM4B) Initiative that encompasses activities, projects, programmes and partnerships to facilitate the implementation of the knowledge management (KM) component of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework by Parties and stakeholders.   The overall objective of the KM4B Initiative is to support effective implementation of the post-2020 GBF through fostering effective knowledge management to enable biodiversity planning, policy formulation, decision-making and implementation processes. The initiative further aims to build capacities for Parties to enable them to identify their KM needs, gaps, challenges and opportunities and elaborate appropriate national KM policy frameworks and practical tools and solutions. Additionally, it aims to enhance synergies and collaboration among biodiversity-related conventions and organizations on knowledge management and encourage and support indigenous peoples, local communities and other stakeholders (including private sector) to create their own collaborative networks and knowledge exchange programmes. The side-event will bring an opportunity for partners to find more information about the KM4B Initiative and discover how they will be able to participate and contribute to its proposed projects.
