Context

In recent years, Montréal has gradually established itself as a leader in sustainable development and more particularly in biodiversity thanks to a solid and innovative local ecosystem, environmental commitments and programs at all levels of government and the presence of internationally recognised research institutions. The SCBD’s presence has also contributed to attracting international environmental organizations (list here), making Montréal a strategic hub for sustainable development organizations.

Montréal is also the 3rd city for international organizations (IOs) in the Americas, bringing together IOs from all sectors and thus making it possible to establish links between biodiversity and several other major issues of our time such as artificial intelligence, finance and tourism.

Objective

This event aims to highlight the work of international organizations based in Montréal in biodiversity protection and sustainable development more generally. This will be an opportunity to showcase not only the innovative projects of IOs, but also how they are anchored and collaborate with the local Montréal ecosystem in sustainable development. The event will follow a roundtable structure and will include concrete examples of projects from Montréal-based international organizations among which GEO BON, Center of Excellence of Destinations, the Commission for Environmental Cooperation, the Global Sustainable Electricity Parnership, Rights and Resources Initiative and Future Earth. It will showcase how complementary these initiatives are and how they contribute to a whole-of-society and holistic approach to biodiversity.
