Quick summary: Genetic diversity and adaptive capacity help ensure resilient ecosystems, support ecosystem services, and benefit society. Genetic diversity is vital in a time of new diseases, invasive pests, habitat change, and climate change. Through short presentations, engaging examples, and conversation, we will: discuss the importance of genetic diversity; explain feasible and affordable genetic diversity indicators that do not require DNA data (A.5, A.8.1, and others); connect indicators to Goal A and Target 4 text; present outcomes of recent national level indicator deployment in 8 countries; and facilitate discussion among Parties on capacity, needs, and partnerships. The diverse co-hosts of this event represent organizations from 15 countries and 5 continents, and many international institutions, highlighting the global importance of this topic. We will show that monitoring and reporting on genetic diversity status and conservation is feasible and necessary.

The Goals of the event are to:

  • Promote knowledge exchange among participants on the importance of genetic diversity for species, ecosystems and humanity, and how genetic diversity can be conserved. Explain linkages between genetic diversity and other targets and aspects of biodiversity.
  • Promote shared understanding of how to assess and report levels of ‘genetic erosion’ without DNA data using affordable and non-technical methods (especially A.5 and A.8.1), using examples. Explain how indicators help track progress towards Target 4 and Goal A, and discuss feasibility and realism in context of current Goal and Target wording.
  • Describe recent progress on country-level genetic diversity indicator deployment in Sweden, Mexico, South Africa, Japan, Belgium, Colombia, France, and Australia.
  • Increase confidence in the feasibility, relevance, coherence, and scientific basis of proposed genetic diversity indicators.
  • Describe resources, support materials, and capacity building opportunities to deploy indicators.

The event will have simultaneous interpretation in Spanish, French, Chinese and Arabic
