Aichi Biodiversity Targets

After the participative process leading to Draft 1 of the Global Biodiversity Framework, negotiations have increasingly been led by parties. Non-state actors, who will play a key role in the implementation of the framework, are pleading to raise the ambition in the Aichi targets and for a framework that is not only inclusive, but also shows coherence between the Rio Conventions and other sector policies. Without this, the global biodiversity agreement in Montreal won’t be considered a success.

Following its side event organized during the OEWG 3 in Geneva, the Post 2020 Biodiversity Framework -EU Support project proposes to organize a side event on key issues still in need of an input by non-state actors to feed into the negotiations of the new GBF.

This side events will give panelists invited the opportunity provide insights, reflections and proposals to improve the existing text for still not conclusive targets in view of their prompt and effective implementation and provide their impression on progress towards an agreement for the last part of COP15.

Progress has been observed in the achievement of the first objective of the CBD and related Aichi targets. However, sustainable use and benefit sharing still remain areas where progress has been slow and not in accordance to the needed successes to bend the curve of biodiversity loss and realize the vision of “Living in Harmony with Nature”.

The side event will welcome high-level personalities representing the sectors of conservation, business, finance, SNLGs, youth, and the climate community on the following subjects:

  1. Creating positive subsidies  for biodiversity (Target 18)
  2. Reducing pollution, pesticides and nutrients (Target 7)
  3. Accomplishing nature-positive productive landscapes / seascapes and mainstreaming (mainly Targets 1, 10, 14)
  4. Making sustainable production and consumption real (mainly Targets 14, 15, 16)
