As countries move into the adoption and then implementation phase of the post-2020 GBF, there will be a new set of challenges to address in order to foster the catalytic potential of mainstreaming biodiversity throughout productive, economic and financial sectors, and new governance models will be needed for transformative change in favor of biodiversity. Biodiversity mainstreaming and governance for transformative change have been two of the key tools for multidimensional progress towards the 2030 Agenda that were identified by experts from the region, during different dialogues co-organized by ECLAC. They were seen as central for developing pathways to address implementation challenges in a more coherent, integral, sustainable and fair way.

The Latin America and the Caribbean region has a rich experience of practices for the mainstreaming of biodiversity and innovative governance in favor of biodiversity from the local to the regional level. Yet, these experiences that contribute to improving the state of biodiversity through its sustainable use are not sufficiently identified, recognized or studied. At a critical moment in which it is necessary to overcome inertia, silos, be ambitious and move into transitions to nature-positive productive systems, ECLAC and Expertise France propose to reflect on the main findings, lessons learned and good practices that could be up-scaled, building also on innovative experiences from cases from other regions and from key stakeholders.
