There is a critical need to promote, team with, and amplify the knowledge of those deeply connected to the land, air and water we depend on. This panel will bring together leaders of Indigenous nations and NGOs who have demonstrated the possibilities of Indigenous-led Natural Climate Solutions in Canada to advance reconciliation, improve community wellbeing, and achieve biodiversity targets.

Through our conversation with organizations such as Conservation through Reconciliation Partnership, Ecotrust Canada, and Nature United, we will share 1. learnings from Indigenous-led NCS projects in Canada, 2. how government policy and private-sector finance can support these efforts, and 3. how Indigenous-led NCS projects support the Post-2020 GBF on a global scale.

  1. Learnings from Indigenous-led NCS projects in Canada – Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas (IPCAs) and forest carbon offset projects such as Great Bear Rainforest and Cheakamus Community Forest enabled Indigenous communities to advance their stewardship priorities.
  2. How government policy and private-sector finance can support these efforts - How establishing Indigenous carbon rights, providing financial resources for Indigenous natural climate solutions and carbon projects support communities and biodiversity goals.
  3. How Indigenous-led NCS projects support the Post-2020 GBF on a global scale – Why funding IPCAs and carbon offset projects can ensure that Indigenous communities obtain benefits from their role in protecting and enhancing biodiversity (Draft Post-2020 GBF Goals B and C).

Existing partnerships: We will build on Deloitte’s work supporting the World Economic Forum around Indigenous-led nature-based solutions.
