This is a joint side event between the UN Environment (UNEP), RAEIN-Africa and the participating Governments of six southern African Governments.

This Global Environment Facility (GEF) funded “Multi Country Project to Strengthen Institutional Capacities on LMO Testing in Support of National Decision Making” (July 2017 – June 2023). The project is implemented by the UN Environment (UNEP) and co-executed by RAEIN Africa. The project is implemented by the governments of Angola, Congo Democratic Republic, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi and Mozambique.

The event will have both UNEP and the African Scientists share their experiences, challenges and outputs in the implementation of the MCP-ICLT.   In addition, the project Technical Team  will share their experience with building capacity on LMO detection of the multi-country laboratories, whose baseline statuses differed both in terms of legal and policy support on biosafety and human and infrastructural capacities.  Using train, the trainer approach the project demonstrated a practical approach on increasing capacity on LMO detection and also promoted the integration of LMO detection in the day-to-day management and decision-making processes of Biosafety. Notwithstanding the fact that at national levels, some of the participating countries do not have legal frameworks governing biosafety, the participating National Executing Agencies would share how the MCP-ICLT contributes to the development of science-based decisions on biosafety and thus, strengthens the participating countries’ capacity to implement the provisions of the CPB.
