This side-event will explore the needs of CBD Parties for monitoring, review and reporting of implementation of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework, and some of the various tools and solutions that may be used to support of national monitoring systems and enhance national reporting, and shared through enhanced cooperation and synergies between various biodiversity-related multilateral environmental agreements and organizations. Parties to the CBD have noted the need for strategic actions on capacity-building and technical and scientific cooperation with a view to enhancing the generation, collection, assessment, access to and effective utilization of data, information, and knowledge to support the effective implementation of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework. UNEP will provide a very brief overview of tools available for enhancing synergies and cooperation which will also be distributed in the form of tool cards amongst the participants of the side event and visitors of the help desk. The key message is that a landscape of collaborating tools should be made available for parties to use for implementation of the post 2020 GBF and receive their feedback. These include, UN Biodiversity Lab, Target tracker concept, DaRT, InforMEA, CBD Bioland tool, Compendia of Guidance, and IBATA review mechanism of the implementation of the post-2020 GBF will be most effective if it is informed by inputs from all biodiversity-related conventions, other relevant MEAs and relevant international organizations. Knowledge management[1] is one of the key strategic means of implementation that will underpin the achievement of the goals and targets of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework. Easy and timely access to the best available, fit-for-purpose biodiversity data, information and knowledge assets is critical for effective planning, policy formulation, decision-making and implementation. However, many governments and organizations still face several challenges in easy and timely access to quality data and information. Moreover, much of what is available is fragmented, difficult to find, or inaccessible. The outcomes of the Bern I and Bern II[2] consultation workshops of biodiversity-related conventions on the post-2020 GBF include concrete conclusions on the involvement of the relevant conventions in the development and implementation of the post-2020 GBF. As concluded by the Bern II report, if multiple MEAs are involved in implementation of particular aspects of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework, then a process should be developed to bring together reported information for the global review of progress in implementation (also referred to as a ‘global stocktake’). Avoiding duplication necessitates a more integrated system for reporting, but any new system will need to build on current tools and processes and use reports that are already there, which may require use of new tools and approaches such as the Data Reporting Tool DaRT. A review mechanism of the implementation of the post-2020 GBF will be most effective if it is informed by inputs from all biodiversity-related conventions, other relevant MEAs and relevant international organizations. This side event is organized by UNEP and UNEP-WCMC and will hear views from Parties on needs for national monitoring, review and reporting to support implementation of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework, and about some of the available tools, platforms and knowledge aimed to enhance synergies at the national and international levels that may be used to support Parties, subject to their needs.
