Goal A of the KMGBF outlines the ambition to halt species extinctions and reduce the extinction rate and risk of all species. This goal is supported by threat-reduction Targets 1-8 and, among those, Target 4 refers to urgent management actions for threatened species and the management of human-wildlife conflicts. Prioritising actions and measuring progress towards Target 4 presents a significant challenge for Parties, and this side event aims to support two key areas: (i) take a strategic approach to the reduction of species extinction risk; and (ii) monitoring progress of effective management of human-wildlife conflict for coexistence.

This side event will focus on helping Parties tackle these challenges, by first discussing the scientific tools available to allow Parties to identify, at local and national scales: a) which threats are most important to tackle in order to reduce species extinction risk; and b) which species require urgent management action. These approaches can make use of global or national datasets, allowing actors to consider both local and global context and work with the data most relevant to their location. After a short presentation, participants will have the opportunity to test and explore the approaches we present. A laptop with Wi-Fi will allow participants to explore the approach presented. Feedback is very welcome.

We will then present the human-wildlife conflict indicator framework – as proposed by the interdisciplinary Working Group convened  by the IUCN SSC Human-Wildlife Conflict & Coexistence Specialist Group (HWCCSG) over the last 8 months. After short presentation on the indicator rollout process and the proposed conceptual framework, we will give the floor to CBD Parties to provide initial feedback.

The side event will be facilitated by the IUCN SSC Global Biodiversity Framework Task Force and IUCN SSC Human-Wildlife Conflict & Coexistence Specialist Group, and prepared in collaboration with HWCCSG Governmental Focal Points, Collaborative Partnership on Sustainable Wildlife Management (CPW), UNEP-WCMC and the CBD Secretariat.
