Topics
Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework

Given the great importance of Positive Incentives which promote voluntary contributions to Biodiversity Conservation, a team of Global Partnership for Business and Biodiversity (GPBB) members and like-minded organizations has invited case studies of outstanding examples of Positive Incentives. Since the proposal was discussed the the annual meeting of the GPBB, this team has collected 23 case studies from 12 countries, with the aim of publishing and sharing them at COP16.

The reasoning supporting this effort is as follows:

  1. Our motive:
    1. Humanity is facing a Crisis of Nature, manifested through the interconnected challenges of Climate Change and Biodiversity Loss. These issues pose severe threats to the well-being of all humanity.
    2. Addressing and mitigating these consequences requires far-reaching transformations in economic systems, logistics, consumer behavior and many other aspects of human activity.
    3. Efforts of governments and international institutions, while urgent and vitally necessary, are insufficient to provide the required solutions.
    4. Non-state actors have a pivotal role in this scenario, collaborating at local, national, and international levels, by raising awareness of the urgency of terminating harmful practices, and by creative efforts to expedite and strengthen essential changes.
    5. Incentives which encourage and accelerate the required transformations are valuable tools, both as state and non-state initiatives.
    6. Positive Incentives, whether monetary or non-monetary, can be directed towards discouraging harmful practices and encouraging the adoption of improved ones.
    7. With collaboration and the exchange of experiences, we can collectively contribute to successful implementation of the GBF.
  2. Our opportunity:
    1. Focusing our collective energy on the experience and potential of positive incentives.
    2. By positive incentives we mean:

“Actions or initiatives developed with the purpose of bringing about a change in voluntary behavior of target audiences, with the effect of beneficial impacts on biodiversity conservation, climate change adaptation and avoidance, and possibly other beneficial environmental impacts.” (preliminary version).

  1. With our collaborative project we can contribute to the implementation of the GBF, and to the impact of COP16.

3. Our Commitments as contributing participants:

  1. As participating organizations (including GPBB members and others), we identify valuable examples of incentives that have demonstrated significant results or significant potential. Such examples can be public (state), private (non-state), or public-private collaborations at the local, national, or regional level.
  2. The selected examples will be documented as case studies for an informed but not necessarily expert readership. Case studies will include an evaluation of the actual or potential weaknesses and risks, transferability to other settings, and any recommendations for a wider audience.
  3. Our commitment is to generate a compendium of good practice examples which can serve to inform and motivate our GPBB community and a wider audience, raising awareness of the importance of incentives to achieve the far-reaching and urgent transformations needed to address the environmental crisis of climate change and biodiversity loss.
