The implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) will be significantly enhanced through strengthened national monitoring systems. To achieve this, the Monitoring Framework must be adopted nationally, considering each country’s capacities and access to implementation support. 

This side event aims to showcase the work ongoing in countries participating in the National Monitoring Support Initiative, to support strengthening national monitoring of implementation of the KM-GBF through NBSAPs. The side event will facilitate exchange between these countries and other Parties, to share best practice, lessons learned so far, and gaps, needs and opportunities for national monitoring; and foster a dynamic discussion among attendees. The event will begin with brief presentations to set the context, followed by real-life examples from Parties illustrating national monitoring implementation efforts. Additionally, the event will feature an open round table dialogue, where speakers and participants can share reflections on the strengths and challenges of monitoring and implementing the GBF. This interactive session will provide valuable insights into the practical aspects of national monitoring systems and their role in achieving biodiversity goals and targets.
