IUCN has recently finalized a study on this topic and will present its main results stimulate a discussion on this very important issue.

The side-event could:

- show the amounts of agricultural supports at global scale,

- suggest which type of agricultural supports are likely to harm / favor biodiversity

- show some connections between the level and type of agricultural subsidies and biodiversity

The general goal is to engage discussions around repurposing agricultural supports so that they are better aligned with biodiversity conservation at national (or regional) levels.

The specific objective is to raise awareness of decision-makers at the interface of the biodiversity and agriculture fields and contribute to implementation of KMGBF Targets 18 and 19 by clarifying some connections between agricultural subsidies and biodiversity.

The proposed side-event relates to COP 16 agenda items 11 (Res mob) and 18 (mainstreaming) and to KM GBF Target 18 and 19.

Participants will provide their perspectives and share their experiences in identifying and reforming the harmful incentives in the agricultural sector.

We are in the making of the event and possible contributors are currently being seeked in the following organizations: FAO, OECD, TNC, CI, BIOFIN, one or two rep. of governments (typically Min. of Agric.).
