Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework

Context

The Global Reporting Initiative released earlier this year the GRI 101 Biodiversity (2024) standard (replacing the GRI 304 of 2016) with the aim to help organizations to report information about their most significant biodiversity-related impacts, and how they can manage them. This framework helps to describe the dependencies, impacts, risks and opportunities of diverse organizations regarding biodiversity. Other initiatives, both regulatory and voluntary are emerging. At the same time, TNFD was published one year ago. in Europe, the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) provides for new sustainability reporting standards, the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS). ESRS 4 focuses specifically on biodiversity and ecosystems and will apply to companies whose impacts on biodiversity are considered "material" following an assessment of the significance of the impacts, risks and opportunities. In France, Article 29 of the Energy-Climate Act also requires financial players to publish new information on biodiversity. Furthermore, ISSB will launch research projects on the risks and opportunities associated with nature and human capital.

Objectives of the round table

  1. The aim of this roundtable will be to review the requirements of Target 15 of the Kunming Montreal Agreements and to observe the progress made by companies and financial institutions since the adoption of the framework
  2. Share an overview of the various reporting frameworks (voluntary and regulatory) and the synergies between them
  3. Overview of the data and tools needed to report on biodiversity
  4. A summary of private sector initiatives on this specific target and how to accelerate action

Main issues adressed :

  1. What is the correspondence between the different reporting frameworks ?
  2. How can we judge what is "material" in the activities of a financial or non-financial company ?
  3. Are the data used to report sufficiently reliable and robust?
  4. Can the involvement of a wide range of stakeholders in a collective judgement be useful in assessing materiality?

Participants

  • Stéphanie Paquin-Jaloux, Group Nature Director, Schneider Electric
  • Isabelle Combarel, Chairman of the Executive Board, Arkéa Capital
  • Nicolas Boquet, Director of Environment, Climate & Energy, AFEP
  • Martin Powell, Director of Sustainable Development, AXA Group
  • Harold Pauwels, Director of Standards, Global Reporting Initiative
  • Moderator : Sustainable Finance Institute (Institut de la Finance Durable). Founded in October 2022, the Sustainable Finance Institute, a branch of Paris EUROPLACE, aims to coordinate, unite and accelerate the Paris financial market's efforts to achieve the ecological transition and transform the economy towards a low-carbon and inclusive model, aligned with the goals of the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals. It brings together all the private, public and institutional players on the Paris financial marketplace and conveys the financial market's positions at the European and international levels. Accompanied by a delegation of 40 financial players, the IFD and its members support the ambition and implementation of the 23 targets of the GBF and call on stakeholders to specify their concrete operationalisation for the private sector.

Fighting deforestation : overview of the strategies of the Paris financial market

The Sustainable Finance Institute published an overview of the strategies of the Paris financial market to fight deforestation. This overview offers a relay to the National Strategy to Combat Imported Deforestation (SNDI), with the mobilization of financial players in the Paris marketplace. This report presents the practices of 15 financial sector players (insurance companies, asset managers and banks) in the Paris financial center, along with tools and actions to combat deforestation, as well as an inventory of the main databases and instruments available.

Platform "Entreprises et Biodiversité"

The platform "Entreprises et Biodiversité", developed by ORÉE's Biodiversity & Economy team and financially supported by the French Biodiversity Office (OFB), is designed as a new space for French economic players and is aimed at all businesses (sectors, size, maturity). It provides the essential resources needed to adopt a pro-biodiversity approach. IFD has compiled with its members a series of tools and databases for assessing biodiversity-related impacts and dependencies in financial portfolios. A number of tools are listed for soil conservation, forests, oceans, water resource management and species conservation.

Construire une démarche biodiversité et répondre à l'Article 29 LEC

Analysis of the ‘article 29 LEC’ reports on biodiversity has highlighted the need to support stakeholders in the development of their biodiversity approach and its operational implementation. After presenting an overview of the various frameworks in which biodiversity issues are currently addressed (Kunming-Montreal agreements, SNB, CSRD, SBT for Nature, etc.), the guide presents the four pillars of a robust biodiversity approach in the order proposed by the application decree: developing a strategy that is in line with international objectives, implementing it through the use of available levers applied to biodiversity (commitment, exclusion, financing), identifying the impacts and dependencies of its portfolio companies without stopping at imperfections in methods and data, and taking biodiversity risk management into account. Appendices provide additional resources for understanding the subject.
