The ambition of Target 3 foresees a significant expansion of the area of land, seas and waters recognized as being under protected or conserved status. The Target requires (among other things) that existing and new protected and conserved areas are governed equitably, managed effectively and that they respect the rights of Indigenous Peoples and local communities, including over their traditional territories. In January and February 2024, a diverse group of rightsholders, conservation staff, NGOs and protected area managers came together in Nanyuki, in Kenya, to chart a way forward for the implementation of Target 3 in a manner that enhances equitable governance, supports the wider use of a human rights-based approach, and respects the rights of Indigenous Peoples and local communities. The resulting Road Map highlights a series of critical actions areas considered to be the most impactful and essential elements of what is needed to deliver equity and respect for rights in area-based conservation. The co-convenors of this workshop come together again in this side-event to present and discuss advances along that Road Map, including delivery of additional guidance for practitioners and for peoples and communities creating or expanding contributions to area-based conservation. This event will showcase and provide access to multiple language versions of guidance produced because of the Nanyuki workshop, including on Equitable Governance, on applying a Human Rights Based Approach [and on Indigenous and Traditional Territories]. In the Road Map critical areas particular attention will be focused on delivering improved guidance, and on building and creating solidarity and networks to improve outcomes. Panel topics to include: Overview of HRBA, equity and the 30x30 target and roadmap for advancing equity and rights (short intro only) Changing discourses: challenging the power dynamic in advancing conservation solutions Networking and solidarity IMPACT Kenya and/or AICA) Results of the Conservation Pathways project fostering diverse approaches to conservation under Target 3 (Colombia, or Guyana partners able to participate) Assessing equity in area-based conservation – meta-analysis of 35 sites that have used SAGE (Naira) Grievance mechanisms: what happens when things go wrong (or went wrong in the past)
