The Nature Champions Network was launched at the Ministerial on Nature hosted by Canada on August 23, 2023, in Squamish, Canada. The Nature Champions Network of Ministers aims to advocate the rapid implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF), support continued global ambition on biodiversity and nature, and promote ambitious actions towards halting and reversing biodiversity loss both at home and abroad. 

As of July 2024, the network has 21 champions: Canada and China (as co-leads of the network), along with Australia, Chad, Colombia, Egypt, European Commission, France, Germany, Ireland, Jamaica, Japan, Mexico, Nigeria, Norway, Palau, Peru, Spain, St-Kitts and Nevis, United Kingdom and United States.      

To achieve these aims, Nature Champions have been identified to act as advocates for advancing action in the following thematic areas:  1) Conservation and Restoration, 2) Sustainable Use and Management of Biodiversity,  3) Equitable Benefits Sharing of Genetic Resources, 4) Resource Mobilization and Biodiversity Mainstreaming, 5) Integrating Climate Change, Biodiversity and Pollution, 6) Inclusive Implementation and Knowledge Sharing (including Indigenous peoples), 7) Building Successful Partnerships with Stakeholders, 8) Oceans. 

With a view to ensure the continued political momentum on biodiversity post-COP15, the Nature Champions Network Ministerial event intends to draw political attention to the actions and progress made towards achieving the KMGBF goals and targets.  Through this, the event will highlight achievements and good practices and key initiatives led by Nature Champions to advance their implementation of the KMGBF. 

The event would take the form of a presentation/panel discussion among Ministers followed by a reception. The Ministerial level panel would also discuss how to continue advancing on the nature agenda, while addressing the challenges ahead. The audience would have a chance to ask questions and network.
