Although the KMGBF sets out an ambitious global agenda through its 23 targets, biodiversity loss continues to advance faster than current responses and the underlying causes of biodiversity loss are poorly addressed according to the Global Report on Collective Progress in the Implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

The objective of the side event is to open a science-based dialogue space on possible solutions to address the underlying causes of biodiversity loss, and why transformative change is needed to implement the KMGBF.

It will be conducted around two central questions:

  1. - What are the main underlying causes of biodiversity loss that can be addressed by each organization to achieve the KMGBF.

  1. - What are the challenges to do so and possible solutions.

  2.

With the participation of IPBES representatives, this side event is a focused opportunity to support an inclusive, evidence-based conversation on one of the key gaps in KMGBF implementation: how to define, measure, and accelerate transformative change in practice.

It will provide a timely and policy-relevant space for governments, scientists, civil society, and indigenous peoples and local communities and help translate the assessment’s findings into practical pathways for KMGBF implementation, including how to address values, behaviors, institutions, power relations, economic incentives, consumption patterns, trade flows, and indicators of progress.

By connecting scientific evidence with implementation needs, the event will make a substantive contribution to ongoing CBD discussions on mainstreaming, whole-of-government and whole-of-society action, and the enabling conditions required to meet the Framework’s goals.
