Drawing on MSF’s experience establishing biosphere reserves (BR) across the region – including two designated BRs in Georgia and the ongoing initiative in Dilijan, Armenia – the event explores how BRs function as practical delivery mechanisms for KMGBF Targets 1 (Plan and Manage all Areas To Reduce Biodiversity Loss), 3 (30x30), 10 (sustainable use of biodiversity), and 22 (Participation & Inclusive Decision-making) in Southern Caucasus. It focuses on how its multi-zone model bridges conservation with sustainable local development, and shows how that works in practice at the example of the newly established BRs in Georgia. Starting from process of elaborating of the first BRs in Southern Caucasus, in Georgia, we zoom into Armenian case of the establishment of the country’s first BR. It would serve as the focal case study: the Dilijan case illustrates how a well-designed BR can translate global commitments into locally owned conservation action. We’d like to invite the audience to follow the process of BR development in Dilijan. The event will culminate in a symbolic ceremony involving the signing of an endorsement letter by the supporters of the BR initiative - Ministry of Environment of RA, Dilijan Municipality, UNESCO MAB Committee and other - marking a concrete milestone in the Dilijan BR nomination process.
