Transboundary conservation is a collaborative approach to achieving conservation objectives across one or more international boundaries. It contributes to maintaining ecological integrity, conserving migratory species, generating socio-cultural and economic benefits, and strengthening cooperation among neighbouring countries. In many contexts, transboundary conservation has also proven to be an important mechanism for promoting peace, as its effective implementation relies on dialogue, trust, transparency and sustained cooperation among stakeholders.

Recognizing these benefits, the Republic of Korea, in its capacity as President of the twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 12) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), launched the Peace and Biodiversity Dialogue Initiative (PBDI). The Initiative supports Parties in implementing Goal 1.3 of the Programme of Work on Protected Areas, which calls for the establishment and strengthening of regional networks, transboundary protected areas, and collaboration among neighbouring protected areas across national boundaries.

This side event will provide an opportunity to discuss how transboundary conservation areas and regional networks can accelerate the implementation of Target 3 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, while simultaneously fostering international cooperation and peacebuilding. Through experiences and lessons learned from projects supported by the PBDI and partner organizations, participants will explore practical approaches, challenges and opportunities for strengthening transboundary cooperation for biodiversity conservation and sustainable development.
