The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF) sets a global plan to halt and reverse biodiversity loss and recognises the private sector as a key contributor to achieving its goals. While the Framework is directed at governments that are Parties to the Convention, there is also an acknowledgement of the role of businesses as key actors in contributing to nature-positive outcomes, and the Framework provides opportunities for private sector action across multiple targets. The integrative nature of the Framework holds an unprecedented potential to achieve collective societal outcomes that improve natural capital and resilience.

Ipieca supports the KMGBF, and in collaboration with Fauna & Flora and with input from IUCN, has developed a GBF Roadmap to support the energy sector, including oil, gas, and alternative energies, in identifying and implementing voluntary contributions, including through national biodiversity strategies and action plans (NBSAPs) and National Targets (or when no NBSAP or targets are available). Designed as an implementation tool, the Roadmap helps operationalise alignment with the GBF goals and targets across diverse business contexts.

This side event will show how the energy sector is turning global biodiversity commitments into practical action across corporate decision-making and site-level operations. Ipieca members operate in more than 180 countries and they have to navigate a wide range of NBSAPs and national targets which are all different. The KMGBF Roadmap is designed to help energy companies take consistent, effective action across these diverse operating contexts.

Fauna & Flora and IUCN will set the scene by outlining the role of business in delivering the KMGBF and bridging the gap between policy and practice. Ipieca member companies including Petronas, TotalEnergies, Shell and Petrobras will then share case studies showcasing their contributions to positive outcomes for nature and people, including through alignment with e.g NBSAPs, integration of biodiversity into decision-making and operations, nature-based solutions and restoration, and partnerships. Government representatives of Malaysia will also be invited to share progress on NBSAPs and national targets, and their views on how energy companies can best support national biodiversity priorities. The workshop will be facilitated by the United States Council for International Business (USCIB).

Finally, the session will highlight how energy companies are translating biodiversity commitments into action, and emphasise the importance of collaboration between governments, industry, conservation organisations, IPs and local communities to scale progress towards the GBF goals.
