Overview

This side event directly supports the COP17 Global Review by providing a comprehensive assessment of how revised NBSAPs 3.0 integrate agroecology, agrobiodiversity and nature-positive food system approaches. The event will launch a new analysis and present country case studies from Zambia and Armenia, and other national contexts, complemented by expert roundtables on key implementation levers, from financing to policy coherence. Together, these elements will help identify ambition gaps and highlight concrete policy actions and implementation pathways. The event will also equip Parties with practical tools to accelerate delivery on Target 10 and food system-related commitments in the run-up to 2030.

Description

The contribution of agroecology and nature-positive food system approaches to national biodiversity action is receiving growing recognition within the CBD and by Parties. This is reflected in the revised NBSAPs of many countries, which increasingly emphasise solutions linked to agroecological and nature-positive food system approaches. Yet this growing recognition is not always matched by implementation. This raises a central question: how can countries move from strategy to concrete action?

Taking place during the first Global Review of the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) at COP17, where Parties will assess collective progress and identify gaps, this event will provide a critical evidence base for stocktaking through a comprehensive analysis of how revised NBSAPs 3.0 integrate agriculture, food systems, agrobiodiversity and agroecology. The findings will help answer a central question of the stocktake: are national plans sufficiently ambitious and actionable to deliver Target 10 and other food system-related commitments by 2030?

Building on previous dialogues held at SBSTTA25, SBSTTA26, SBSTTA27 and COP16, the event will bring together country representatives and technical experts from government, academia, youth, civil society and organisations providing technical assistance to governments during NBSAP formulation and implementation. Following the presentation of the NBSAP analysis, two roundtable discussions will explore the key levers needed to translate strategies into action, including capacity-building, a whole-of-society approach, funding, monitoring and evaluation, technical support and policy coherence.

Drawing on country experiences from Zambia and Armenia and and other national contexts, the event will showcase enabling policies, technical pathways and practical tools that can support agroecological transitions as part of integrated and holistic food systems that work for biodiversity.

The event will offer practical insights that feed into ongoing CBD processes related to the implementation and review of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, in particular Decision 15/4 and GBF Target 10 on sustainable agriculture, aquaculture, fisheries and forestry, including through agroecological and other biodiversity-friendly approaches; Decision 16/32 on Mechanisms for planning, monitoring, reporting and review, including the global review of collective progress in the implementation of the KMGBF; SBSTTA Recommendation 27/9 on biodiversity and agriculture; CBD Decision 16/13 on mainstreaming biodiversity within and across sectors. It will also connect to recent IUCN World Conservation Congress resolutions adopted in Abu Dhabi in 2025, Resolution 8.002 Accelerating action for nature-positive, sustainable agriculture and food systems; and 8.083 Developing a bioeconomy that is circular and sustainable for sustainable food and agriculture.

Objectives

  • Present a comprehensive assessment of how revised NBSAPs 3.0 align with nature-positive food system and agroecological approaches, complementing the Global Review on Target 10 and other food system-related commitments, while identifying concrete showcases and actions with potential of high impact.
  • Discuss key levers for moving from NBSAP strategy to implementation at national level, including capacity-building, a whole-of-society approach, resource mobilisation, monitoring and evaluation, technical assistance and policy coherence.
  • Equip Parties and observers with practical tools and analyses to support implementation, including an assessment of agriculture and food systems measures in revised NBSAPs, a policy brief on trends in the inclusion of agroecology, and the Agrobiodiversity Index.

Connection to CBD-COP17 agenda

This event directly supports the first Global Review of the GBF linked to Decision 16/32 through:

  • Benchmarking and ambition: assessing national commitments to match the scale of transformation needed, identifying both gaps and good practices models;
  • Identifying implementation bottlenecks: surfacing practical barriers to translating NBSAP strategies into on-the-ground action;
  • Informing the post-stocktake acceleration phase: equipping Parties with concrete tools to accelerate implementation in the run-up to 2030.

Programme

  • Part I: Global Review and NBSAPs 3.0 - where do countries stand?
    • Presentation of comprehensive assessment of how all revised NBSAPs 3.0 align with sustainable food system and agroecological approaches.
  • Part 2: How to move from strategy to implementation – perspectives from countries and technical experts
    • Roundtable among country representatives (notably Armenia and Zambia) to reflect on countries’ approaches, opportunities and challenges regarding implementation of NBSAPs 3.0.
    • Roundtable among technical experts supporting countries on capacity-building, meaningful whole-of-society engagement, notably of youth, resource mobilisation, monitoring and evaluation, technical assistance and policy coherence.
