Background: The conservation, restoration, and sustainable management of forests are critical to planetary wellbeing, the successful implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF) and the achievement of the Global Forest Goals (GFGs) established by the United Nations Strategic Plan for Forests 2017-2030 (UNSPF). Forest ecosystems are home to approximately 80% of the world’s terrestrial biodiversity and are essential to the livelihoods of millions of people worldwide. While there have been positive developments in areas such as protected forests, sustainable forest management, forest-related data and international cooperation, persistent challenges remain, including continued forest loss, degradation, climate-related pressures and financing gaps (Global Forest Goals Report, 2026) which negatively impacts biodiversity conservation. Through the CBD’s national reporting processes, 72% of Parties submitted national targets that address sustainable forestry; data from FAO’s Global Forest Resources Assessment indicates that although the rate of deforestation has slowed to 10.9 million hectares per year in 2015-2025, it still remains too high. The CBD has long recognized the importance of forest biodiversity, including through the Expanded programme of work on forest biological diversity (PoWFB) (decision VI/22, paragraph 10, annex)1. Adopted in 2002, the PoWFB was developed to provide guidance for CBD Parties and stakeholders to support national forest policies and develop dedicated tools, reports, case studies and initiatives to act on forest biodiversity. A Strategic review of and update to the expanded programme of work on forest biodiversity in the context of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework2 was considered by CBD Parties in 2025 at SBSTTA-27. To support Parties’ consideration of this agenda item at SBSTTA-27, the Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF) developed an information document3 outlining its contributions to support Parties in achieving the goals and targets of the KMGBF, in line with the GFGs of the UNSPF. At COP 17, Parties are expected to adopt a decision on forest biodiversity, including a list of complementary activities to the expanded programme of work on forest biodiversity. These complementary activities could provide an entry point for cooperation among CPF members to support countries in advancing forest biodiversity while strengthening coherence with the KMGBF, the GFGs and other international processes, obligations and commitments. This side event will showcase relevant CPF Joint Initiatives to support the conservation and sustainable use of forest biodiversity and present successful forest biodiversity-related tools, platforms, policies, programmes and actions from countries, the private sector and civil society. Forest stakeholders will have the opportunity to exchange ideas, discuss critical forest biodiversity issues, and explore future collaborative opportunities to implement the forest biodiversity programme of work. As part of the CPF Joint Initiative on Mainstreaming Biodiversity, SCBD and UNFFS will launch the joint publication and policy brief on forest policy coherence. The publication synthesizes key findings from recent regional studies in Africa and Latin America and the Caribbean on the alignment of forest and biodiversity policies. It highlights common challenges, emerging opportunities and priority actions to strengthen coherence across policy, institutional, monitoring and financing frameworks. By drawing on concrete country experiences, the brief aims to support policymakers, practitioners and partners in advancing more integrated and effective implementation of global forest and biodiversity commitments. Side event objectives: - Support Parties’ deliberations on the Strategic Review and Update to the Expanded programme of work on forest biodiversity in the context of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, and exchange ideas and identify opportunities for implementation - Raise awareness on the CPF and its Joint Initiatives in advancing the conservation and sustainable use of forest biodiversity through policy coherence and field actions - Launch the joint publication and policy brief on forest policy coherence developed in the context of the CPF Joint Initiative on Mainstreaming Biodiversity in Forestry - Discuss CPF members’ system tools, platforms and policies that further support forest biodiversity (e.g., ITTO/IUCN Guidelines for the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Biodiversity in Tropical Timber Production Forests, ITTO Tropical Integrated Fire Management Toolkit; CITES Guidance on non-detriment findings and legal acquisition findings; GEF support to the implementation of the CBD and to the protection of primary forests) - Identify practical follow-up opportunities for CPF members in support of COP17 outcomes on forest biodiversity, including more integrated, large-scale initiatives in the final stretch toward 2030 and beyond.
