Background

COP 16 adopted an historical decision establishing the Subsidiary Body on Article 8(j) and Other Provisions of the Convention on Biological Diversity Related to Indigenous Peoples and local communities (SB8J).

The establishment of the SB8J marks a significant advance in the recognition of the roles, rights and contribution of Indigenous Peoples and local communities in the implementation of Convention as it the SB8J is the first international permanent body in the environment Conventions.

In this side event, the International Indigenous Forum on Biodiversity (IIFB) will present its experience and views on the modus operandi of the Subsidiary Body on Article 8(j) and Other Provisions of the Convention on Biological Diversity Related to Indigenous Peoples and local communities and how it can be work based on the experience of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Intersessional Working Group on Article 8(j) and Related Provisions of the Convention on Biological Diversity.

 

Objectives

  1. Share Indigenous Peoples' perspectives on the establishment and operation of the SB8J.
  2. Reflect on lessons from the Article 8(j) Working Group to guide the SB8J’s work.
