Background

Indigenous Peoples and local communities have maintained for millennia a biocultural relationship in harmony with Mother Earth and based on their knowledge systems and customary sustainable use, conserve a high percentage of the planet's biodiversity in their lands, waters and territories, coastal and marine areas and in the areas beyond national jurisdictions.

This contribution is recognized by the CBD as well as in the Agreement on Marine Biological Diversity of Areas beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ Agreement).

At the side event, Indigenous Peoples and local communities will present their work on the links between the CBD and the BBNJ Agreement, including views on modalities for the modification of descriptions of ecologically or biologically significant marine areas.

Objectives

  1. Present the linkages between the CBD and the BBNJ Agreement
