Countries have made unprecedented commitments to restore degraded ecosystems under the CBD, UNCCD and UNFCCC. But are we meeting the moment? While ambition has grown, implementation remains constrained by fragmented institutions, disconnected monitoring systems, and duplicated reporting obligations with uneven technical capacity.

Delivering restoration at scale relies on building a more integrated restoration architecture by aligning data systems, technical support and partnerships for more effective and coordinated action. To better understand global restoration efforts, it is essential to build a complete picture of such efforts -- countries can generate the evidence needed for investment planning, long-term learning, and ensure that restoration efforts contribute to our collective understanding of progress toward global goals.

The Target 2 Road Map (Decision 16/35) was established to support countries to move towards a coordinated restoration system that supports planning, implementation, monitoring and reporting across the Rio Conventions. It aligns with the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration Task Force on Monitoring and promotes coherence across commitments made under the Rio Conventions (CBD, UNCCD, UNFCCC) and the Ramsar Convention.

This side event will demonstrate how interoperability between the Framework for Ecosystem Restoration Monitoring (FERM), CBD Online Reporting Tool (ORT) and the UNCCD Performance Review and Assessment of Implementation System (PRAIS) reporting system helps countries reduce reporting burdens while generating more consistent information for restoration planning, adaptive management and international reporting.

The event will be led by FAO, the Secretariats of the CBD and the UNCCD, together with Regional Technical and Scientific Cooperation Support Centres -  the Joint Research Centre (JRC), the Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD) and the Sahara and Sahel Observatory (OSS) to illustrate how regional support helps countries address shared technical and institutional challenges.

Country representatives (TBC) from Türkiye, Brazil and China, will share practical experience in aligning national restoration strategies, data systems and reporting processes to deliver benefits for biodiversity, land degradation neutrality and sustainable development. Building on country experiences and technical demonstrations, the discussion will challenge participants to consider what is required to make restoration a truly shared agenda across biodiversity, climate and land degradation neutrality commitments and what is needed to scale integrated restoration systems globally as a foundation for implementation of the Rio Conventions and the post-2030 biodiversity agenda.

Objectives:

- Demonstrate how integrated restoration monitoring can reduce national reporting burdens across the Rio conventions

- Showcase how the Target 2 Roadmap is supporting countries to build coherent restoration systems through harmonized monitoring and coordinated capacity support

- Share insights of achievements of CBD regional technical and scientific cooperation support centers

- Identify opportunities to strengthen collaboration, interoperability and technical support (e.g., in planning and implementation processes) to prepare for post-2030 planning
