Title Climate Change Adaptation in Protected Areas: Building Resiliency for 2030 and Beyond
Hosts
UNEP | Fundação grupo Boticário | GRID-Arendal | Parana University | CMS | WWF-US |

Climate change is affecting both how existing Protected Areas (PAs) can continue to protect the biodiversity they were originally designated to safeguard, as well as the design and designation of future PAs and PA networks (KMGBF Target 3). Not considering climate resiliency for protected areas weakens management’s ability to prevent further biodiversity loss, but what options do managers have to buffer against climate impacts like drought, heatwaves, wildfires and shifting rainfall? In order to help conservation managers adopt a “climate lens” across operational decisions and policymakers mainstream this approach at national and regional scales, case studies from Brazil (Adapting Protected Areas Project, and Integrated Fire Management, Boticário Group Foundation and  Geoprocessing Laboratory of Paraná University) and from Kyrgyzstan/Tajikistan (Central Asian Mammals & Climate Adaptation Project) will be presented. Presenters will outline the tools, solutions, and approaches that were used to help address the climate-change gap at local and national scales, discuss lessons learned during development, and how these solutions can help inform future directions for wider PA networks through 2030 and beyond.
