Strong commitments have been made across the Rio Conventions to advance gender-responsive action on land, climate, and nature, yet significant gaps remain. Over the past decade, countries have translated these global commitments into comprehensive—and in some cases ambitious—national gender equality priorities embedded in NDCs, NBSAPs, NAPs, LTS-LEDS, and land targets and strategies. However, many countries still lack the resources and capacities needed to turn these commitments into sustained action. National institutions often require ongoing technical assistance, robust data systems, and effective coordination mechanisms to maintain progress. At the same time, gender-responsive solutions remain insufficiently financed and are not yet fully operationalized at scale. Without sustained support, these commitments risk remaining aspirational rather than delivering transformative change.

To address these gaps, several recent initiatives have focused on supporting countries to translate gender commitments into sustained, financed, and implemented action that advances women’s leadership and solutions for gender equality, climate, and biodiversity outcomes. By providing structured technical assistance and unlocking targeted financing opportunities, these initiatives help ensure that national implementation processes are effectively supported, promoting gender-responsive and women-led solutions and accelerating high-quality delivery on the ground.

Hosted by UNDP, UN Women, with the National Committee for Gender Equality of Mongolia this side event aims to elevate gender equality as a transformative lever across climate and nature agendas by showcasing evidence, partnerships, and scalable solutions. It will highlight lessons learned and good practices from countries that have successfully integrated gender equality into land, climate, and biodiversity priorities, and implemented gender-responsive, women-led solutions that deliver co-benefits and relevant outcomes from the UNCCD COP17 in Mongol. In doing so, the event will emphasize the critical role of equitable policies and institutional frameworks in enabling scalable, gender-responsive outcomes across sectors; showcase country-level experiences in translating global commitments into locally grounded action that strengthens women’s leadership, agency, and community ownership; and explore pathways to identify, finance, and scale up gender-responsive solutions that deliver integrated outcomes for land, biodiversity, and climate.
