Introduction Indigenous lands in Brazil are home to some of the best-preserved ecosystems on the planet and play a strategic role in biodiversity conservation, the maintenance of ecosystem services, and efforts to combat climate change. These outcomes are directly linked to Indigenous peoples’ ways of life, traditional knowledge, and systems of territorial governance. In this context, the Territorial and Environmental Management Plans (PGTAs), established under the National Policy for Territorial and Environmental Management of Indigenous Lands (PNGATI), have become one of the main planning and governance instruments used by Indigenous peoples in their territories. Developed and implemented by Indigenous peoples themselves, PGTAs integrate traditional knowledge, the sustainable use of natural resources, and public environmental policies to promote biodiversity conservation, territorial protection, cultural preservation, and the strengthening of Indigenous autonomy. This event will present concrete examples of PGTAs being implemented across different Brazilian biomes, highlighting outcomes related to strengthened territorial governance, ecosystem protection, deforestation prevention, the promotion of Indigenous socio-bioeconomies, and biodiversity conservation. These experiences will be presented by Indigenous leaders who play a central role in these processes, in partnership with representatives of the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples and the International Institute of Education of Brazil. The event aims to demonstrate how public policies developed and implemented in partnership with Indigenous peoples can deliver effective results toward fulfilling Brazil’s international commitments under the Convention on Biological Diversity. Goals Contribution to the Global Biodiversity Framework The experiences presented are particularly relevant to Targets 3, 22, and 23 of the Global Biodiversity Framework, as they promote ecosystem conservation through Indigenous territorial management, the recognition of traditional knowledge, the effective participation of Indigenous peoples in biodiversity governance, and the strengthening of inclusive public policies. They also contribute to targets related to the sustainable use of biodiversity, ecosystem restoration, enhanced climate resilience, and expanded cooperation and financing mechanisms. Format Expected Outcomes It is expected to strengthen the exchange of experiences among countries, expand technical and financial partnerships for Indigenous-led initiatives, and demonstrate that implementation of the Global Biodiversity Framework depends on strengthening Indigenous rights, governance, and knowledge systems. By bringing together government representatives, Indigenous organizations, and civil society, the event will showcase concrete results achieved across diverse Brazilian territories, reinforcing that investments in Indigenous territorial management generate measurable benefits for biodiversity conservation, climate change mitigation, ecosystem protection, and sustainable development. These experiences offer a successful model that merits further support and holds strong potential for adaptation and replication in other countries.
