Health systems cannot be resilient without resilient ecosystems. Yet biodiversity is still too often viewed as an environmental issue rather than a fundamental determinant of health and well-being. As Parties advance implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and the Global Action Plan on Biodiversity and Health, there is a unique opportunity to reposition biodiversity as a foundation for resilient health systems and sustainable development.
This event marks the global launch of the WHO–The Nature Conservancy Policy Brief Series on Nature-based Solutions for Biodiversity, Climate and Health. The inaugural brief, Delivering Health through Nature, presents a strategic vision and policy recommendations for integrating biodiversity, climate and health considerations into decision-making, planning and investment across sectors, supporting countries in translating global commitments into coherent national action.
Bringing together representatives from governments, Indigenous Peoples, international organizations and partner institutions, the event will introduce the key messages of the inaugural brief and explore how integrated approaches can strengthen policy coherence across biodiversity, climate and health agendas. Discussions will examine opportunities to better integrate biodiversity into health systems, National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs), climate adaptation and resilience planning, while highlighting the enabling conditions for implementation, including governance, financing, cross-sectoral collaboration and diverse knowledge systems.

The event will highlight key elements of the brief, supported by examples from practice:

  1. General connections between NbS, biodiversity, climate, and health, including health benefit pathways corresponding to specific NbS and health domains;
  2. Key principles for equitable design and implementation;
  3. Priorities for scaling NbS for health;
  4. Evidence gaps and knowledge needs; and
  5. Connection to global goals and policy coherence opportunities.

A primary focus will be on enabling community-led and Indigenous-led NbS and nature as a health asset, building on the WHO Traditional Medicine Global Library and case studies from multiple continents. A roundtable panel will feature insights that can inform implementation toward the Global Action Plan for Biodiversity and Health while fostering synergies on climate adaptation and health strategies.

The policy brief series supports implementation of the Global Action Plan on Biodiversity and Health and advances the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, particularly Goal B on maintaining nature's contributions to people and Goal D on strengthening the means of implementation, while contributing to Targets 8, 11, 12, 14, 21 and 22 through integrated policy approaches, strengthened policy coherence, cross-sectoral collaboration, knowledge exchange and inclusive governance.
