UNEP-WCMC is convening an informal webinar to present preliminary insights on a scoping study on ‘the potential future commercial use of digital sequence information (DSI).’

Ahead of the sixteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), UNEP-WCMC, in collaboration with the Secretariat to the CBD, has prepared a draft scoping study as a contribution to discussions on the multilateral mechanism on DSI, in particular, on forward-looking aspects affecting the potential use of DSI that may be considered for its operationalization.

This informal discussion will present preliminary insights of the scoping study and there will be opportunities for questions and answers.

This webinar is informal and not part of the formal process. It is organized by UNEP-WCMC with the support of the CBD Secretariat to facilitate broader understanding and exchange of ideas among parties and stakeholders. Feedback from attendees at the webinar will be noted and feed into further areas of work.

The draft study is accessible below. Access is provided on the condition that you do not circulate it further. Feedback on the report will be gathered during the discussion in the webinar.

In order to access the draft you will first need to sign in to the Convention website and/or create a user account. Reviewers encountering difficulty in accessing the draft can request an electronic copy be sent to them directly by sending an email to: secretariat@cbd.int.

The Working Group at its second meeting included in its recommendation a placeholder for administration of the fund pending a final decision by the Conference of the Parties. The Advisory Committee on Resource Mobilization, at its third meeting, examined the adequate entity to receive and disburse the revenue generated by the mechanism established under decision 15/9 (CBD/COP/16/5), and the Committee considered the advantages and disadvantages of several fund host options.

The co-chairs of the Committee of the Whole, together with the co-chairs of the Advisory Committee on Resource Mobilization, will convene this webinar to provide a summary of the outcomes from the third meeting of the Advisory Committee.
