In its resolution 61/203, the General Assembly declared 2010 the International Year of Biodiversity and in resolution 63/219, it decided, as a contribution to the International Year, to convene a high-level meeting of the General Assembly at its 65th session, with the participation of Heads of State, Governments and delegations.

The high-level meeting took place on 22 September 2010 and was chaired by the President of the 65th session of the General Assembly. Panels were co-chaired by Heads of State and Government at the invitation of the President of the 64th session of the General Assembly on the basis of equitable geographical representation.

Participants addressed biodiversity for the first time, focusing on the post-2010 targets and the role of biodiversity and ecosystem services in addressing the challenges of climate change, poverty reduction and economic development.

A summary of discussions prepared by the President of the 65th session of the General Assembly is available below. Under the President's authority, this summary will be presented to the tenth meeting of the CBD Conference of the Parties in Nagoya, Japan, in October 2010.
