Financial support
[#1128]
Good day.
I would like to ask you some questions:
1. Which aims and tasks should the project has to be financed by your organization? Should the project has National level or International level? How many countries or organization should take part in the project to get the financial support?
2.Can we get your financial support for biotechnology international training course, that will include one of main topics - biodiversity and biosafety? The Institute of Genetics and Cytology of National Academy of Sciences of Belarus has very good reputation among Post-Soviet research Institutions, modern equipment for masters-classes and friendly staff. Besides we can cooperate participants who knows English and Russian languages. It is rather important to know both languages.
I hope you can help.
Dr. Elena Guzenko, Deputy of Director of The Institute of Genetics and Cytology of National Academy of Sciences of Belarus.

Dr. Elena Guzenko, Deputy of Director of The Institute of Genetics and Cytology of National Academy of Sciences of Belarus.
Dear Dr. Guzenko:
Thank you for your question. Please see my responses below.
1. Which aims and tasks should the project have to be financed by your organization?
GEF provides funding to cover the incremental costs of country-driven projects from GEF-eligible countries to generate global environmental benefits in all the GEF focal areas. For biodiversity projects, the projects have to address the objectives of the CBD, be endorsed by the country's GEF operational focal point, be aligned with the country's National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan as well as the GEF-6 biodiversity strategy.
2. Should the project have National level or International level?
The vast majority of GEF projects are designed to be implemented at national level, however, some have regional and global components and some projects have been supported in the past that have a purely global focus.
3. How many countries or organization should take part in the project to get the financial support?
The key eligibility criteria for support is summarized in the answer to question one above. Most GEF biodiversity projects are designed and implemented in one country. The number of organizations that may take part in a project depends on the kind of project itself and is not part of the project eligibility criteria.
4. Can we get your financial support for biotechnology international training course, that will include one of main topics - biodiversity and biosafety?
GEF provides support to countries that have ratified the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety. These projects build capacity primarily and help countries meet their obligations under the Protocol. If the Government of Belarus prioritized the submission of a project in biosafety, and training was deemed a critical element to achieve the overall project objective, then this type of activity would be eligible for funding. We do not support stand-alone training courses that are not linked to a higher-level project objective and goal.
Please let me know if you have further questions or require clarification on any of the above points.
Thank you again for your interest in the GEF.
Sincerely,
Mark Zimsky
