Since 2008, the Initiative has been financing climate and biodiversity projects in developing countries and emerging economies, as well as in countries in transition. By the end of 2014, BMUB has initiated 446 initiatives with funding totaling some 1.6 billion euros. The projects are carried out by a broad range of entities: the German Government's major implementing organisations Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and KfW Entwicklungsbank, multilateral organisations like United Nations organisations and multilateral development banks, NGOs, research institutes, foundations and private companies. The IKIs work focuses on four areas: - Mitigating greenhouse gas emissions
- Adapting to the impacts of climate change
- Conserving natural carbon sinks with a focus on reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD+)
