Specific Activities
1. Inclusion of the GSPC targets in NBSAPs
The CBD Secretariat has produced a number of training modules on national biodiversity strategies and action plans, and other aspects of implementation of the Convention. BGCI will review these modules for the inclusion of suitable content related to the GSPC and will provide such content to the CBD Secretariat. BGCI will also produce a specific module on the inclusion of GSPC targets in NBSAPs which will also be available through the GSPC toolkit.

2. Preparation of regional capacity building and technical workshops
Decision X/17 para. 10 (c): “Organize regional capacity‐building and training workshops on national, subregional and regional implementation of the Strategy...”
While these workshops will not take place in 2011, BGCI will prepare background materials for use in such workshops in 2012, should funding be made available. The training materials will be based around the GSPC toolkit, which they will support and enhance. BGCI will work closely with other members of the GPPC in developing these materials.

3. Promotion of the United Nations Decade on Biodiversity 2011-2020
At the initiative of Japan, the tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity recommended to the United Nations General Assembly to declare 2011-2020 as the United Nations Decade on Biodiversity. Resolution 65 161, of the sixty fifth session of the United Nations General Assembly declared the period 2011 – 2020 to be “the United Nations Decade on Biodiversity, with a view to contributing to the implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity for the period 2011-2020”. BGCI will use disseminate materials and engage with partners in promoting the UN Decade on Biodiversity 2011-2020.

4. Development of technical rationale, milestones and indicators for the GSPC targets
Decision X/17 para. 10. (a): “Further develop, with the flexible coordination mechanism, the technical rationales, milestones and indicators for the updated Strategy, consistent with the Strategic Plan of the Convention beyond 201, for review by the Subsidiary Body on the Scientific, Technical and Technological Matters at its 15th meeting”.
BGCI will work particularly with members of the GPPC to further develop the technical rational for each of the 16 targets of the GSPC. Updated technical rationales will be presented and discussed during the upcoming meeting of the GPPC, planned for July 2011 at Missouri Botanic Gardens in St. Louis, USA. With regard to milestones and indicators, these will be considered in the context of Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020. Separate indicators and milestones for the GSPC will generally not be developed, but BGCI will seek to ensure that indicators for the targets of the CBD Strategic Plan will include measure that are relevant also for measuring progress towards associated GSPC targets. In this respect, BGCI will support the Ad Hoc Technical Expert Group (AHTEG) on Indicators for the Strategic Plan on Biodiversity 2011‐2020 and the parallel expert meeting, due to take place in High Wycombe in June 2011. BGCI will then discuss progress made on the development of GSPC‐relevant indicators with the GPPC at its meeting in July 2011 and will finalize documentation on the GSPC for consideration by SBSTTA-16.

5. Promoting further GSPC implementation
Decision X/17 para. 8: “ ....to promote the implementation of the strategy by all relevant sectors at national level....”
BGCI will coordinate the production of a printed version of the GSPC 2011‐2020, to be made available in the official United Nations languages and seek to distribute this widely. The document would include a short version of the technical rationales as well as making clear linkages between the GSPC targets and the targets of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020. BGCI will also produce a ‘Popular Guide for the GSPC’ for use by educators and students.
Through promoting the GSPC at meetings, conferences and via its extensive network, and by disseminating documentation, BGCI will aim to raise awareness of the GSPC amongst a less ‘technical’ audience. BGCI will also ensure that updated information about the GSPC is available on its own and the CBD’s website to assist national and regional implementation of the GSPC.

6. GSPC toolkit at the GPPC conference and other relevant events in 2011
Work on the GSPC toolkit will be carried out during 2011 under a separate contract with the CBD Secretariat.
The draft toolkit will be demonstrated in an on‐line version for review and finalization during 2011 and taking advantage of the peer-review of documentation for SBSTTA 16 in late 2011. This will provide an opportunity for feedback and comments on the toolkit to be provided to BGCI in advance of finalising the toolkit by 2012 (as requested in Decision X/17).

7. Technical and logistic support for the GSPC Liaison Group meeting
BGCI will work closely with the CBD Secretariat, the GPPC, and Missouri Botanic Gardens to prepare and organize the GSPC Liaison Group meeting scheduled for 7-8 July 2011. Activities will include preparation of documentation (as described under activities 1 and 3 above) and arrangements to facilitate the participation of a representative number of developing country experts representing their countries in the Liaison Group meeting.

Amount of co-funding secured by Botanic Gardens Conservation International as of 18 April 2011 as a contribution to the above activities: US$ 22,000 (during 2011)
Additional resources for GSPC toolkit from Spain and Ireland: US$ 67,800 (over two years).
