Japan Biodiversity Fund

Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety

JBF support played an essential role in enhancing a wide range of stakeholders’ capacities for integrating biosafety concerns into a variety of sectoral and cross-sectoral policy and legal instruments and institutional frameworks. Throughout implementation of the programme, developing country Parties gained knowledge in a variety of areas including, the Biosafety Clearing-House, detection and documentation requirements for living modified organisms, risk assessment and management, and the core requirements and measures needed to implement the Nagoya – Kuala Lumpur Supplementary Protocol on Liability and Redress at the national level. The programme resulted in enhanced coordination between biosafety and biodiversity focal points and the identification of best practices and opportunities for further biosafety mainstreaming. In several countries where pilot projects were implemented, the programme was a catalyst for legislative and policy developments and in obtaining additional funding for biosafety.
