Climate Change and Biodiversity

The JBF supported the Secretariat’s Climate Change programme to build Parties’ capacities to integrate drylands biodiversity and climate change concerns into NBSAPs, and into national development processes, thereby harnessing synergies in the implementation of the three Rio Conventions. Activities included a live online Q&A session, seminars, workshops, webinars, online forums and conferences, and joint capacity building activities with the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification.

The JBF, with partners including the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the World Bank, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), supported the development and dissemination of tools for identifying gaps and opportunities for using ecosystem-based approaches for climate change mitigation and adaptation. A targeted output was a capacity-building workshop for pilot countries to include ecosystem-based approaches to climate change mitigation and adaptation in national biodiversity planning processes. As a result of the project, the GEF decided to establish a partnership with other partners to pilot national level implementation of ecosystem-based approaches for adaptation and mitigation.
