Forest Biodiversity

Forests are diverse ecosystems, with rich biological habitats of plants, animals, and microorganisms. Forests also provide functions and services such as timber and non-timber forest products, water catchments, recreation, and mitigation of climate change impacts. However, deforestation, fragmentation, and climate change are progressively threatening forest ecosystem diversity.

The JBF provided capacity building and development support for the implementation of Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) activities, enhancement of forest biodiversity reporting, improvement of forest governance, and improvement of coordination with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF), and the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF). This support resulted in integration of forest-related Aichi Biodiversity Targets into updated NBSAPs and into broader national policies, and increased capacities on forest governance to implement forest-related Aichi Biodiversity Targets and promote policy coherence.
