Island Biodiversity

The JBF supported the in-depth review of the programme of work on island biodiversity conducted in 2011. The in-depth review report was distributed through email, social media and the CBD website and it supported the eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) negotiations, culminating in decision XI/15.

The JBF also supported the organization of an Island Summit held on the margins of COP 11. The summit was attended by more than 200 delegates from small island developing states and provided an opportunity for exchange on sustainable financing and control of invasive alien species, which pose a particularly large threat to island biodiversity. The Summit facilitated enhanced coordination between regional European Islands and non-Party governments; identification of best practices focused on small-scale fisheries, municipal leadership, and Locally Managed Marine Areas (LMMAs); and coordinated Party support for the implementation of to decision XI/15.
