Plant Conservation

The tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP10) adopted a consolidated update of the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC) 2011-2020 and decided to pursue the implementation of the Strategy as part of the broader framework of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020.

The JBF supported the national, regional, and sub-regional implementation of the updated GSPC through capacity-building activities such as workshops, training courses, and the development of the GSPC Toolkit. This resulted in developing countries retaining greater capacity to carry out plant conservation actions including Red Listing, seed conservation, and forest restoration. More than 15 targeted capacity building materials were produced, 400 people were trained, 1,788 plant biodiversity assessments were completed and included on the IUCN Red List, and the seeds of 124 threatened species were collected for ex-situ conservation. The programme led to increased appreciation among policy makers on the importance of conserving plants in achieving the Aichi Biodiversity Targets, other Multilateral Environmental Agreements targets, and the Sustainable Development Goals.
