United Nations Decade on Biodiversity and Awareness-Raising

The 65th General Assembly declared the period 2011-2020 to be the “United Nations Decade on Biodiversity (UNDB), with a view to contributing to the implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020”.

The JBF supported capacity-building and awareness-raising initiatives to increase public awareness on biodiversity values and conservation measures during the UN decade. Numerous initiatives were implemented including the production of communications tools, such as an official video available on YouTube to promote the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity. The JBF also built international and regional momentum for UNDB by supporting 7 regional launches in developing countries and a global launch for the UNDB, held in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, on 17-19 December 2011.

In addition to the initiatives implemented for the UNDB, the JBF supported 15 developing country consultations between citizens and policy-makers, where participants learned about biodiversity and shared their views and suggestions with policymakers who were invited to implement them. The results of the consultations were compiled in the World Wide Views on Biodiversity: from the world’s citizens to the biodiversity policymakers report and an information booklet was prepared.
