The 9th annual meeting of the Global Partnership for Business and Biodiversity was held at the Fundación Biodiversidad offices in Madrid, Spain. The meeting provided an opportunity for initiatives and partners to meet ahead of the upcoming 15th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity, where a new post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework will be explored. Over 60 participants were able to join the discussion and had the opportunity to share their knowledge, experiences, best practices and inputs. The meeting was hosted by the Spanish Business and Biodiversity Initiative and Fundación Biodiversidad.
The meeting was held in the margins of the 2019 Natural Capital Week, which also saw the Collaboration Day by Capitals Coalition and the European Business and Nature Summit. The meeting provided a platform for greater discussion, collaboration and learning. It emphasized concrete action, greater visibility and promotion of the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework. Some actions that were highlighted include the production of the Voluntary Business Contributions to the CBD for 2020 and beyond
document, the results of the IPBES Global Assessment Report, the road to 2020, and more.
Multiple tools and mechanisms were presented and discussed at the meeting. They spoke of a need for concrete measuring systems and disclosure of biodiversity impacts and dependencies. Moreover, collaborations and partnerships led the second half of the meeting and shared their ambitions towards the new framework and biodiversity conservation.
Ahead of the 2020 ‘super year’ there are major opportunities for business to get involved and shape their activities according to the promotion and conservation of biodiversity. This urgent message was heard and unanimously encouraged by the participants of the annual meeting.
