Introduction
In decision 15/9, paragraph 22 (b) and (c), the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity requested the Executive Secretary to:
(b) Commission a study to analyse and model the extent to which a multilateral mechanism for benefit-sharing from the use of digital sequence information on genetic resources, and any other options the Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group may decide, meets the criteria in paragraphs 9 and 10 of the present decision;
(c) Commission a study on the options for revenue-generating measures at different points along the value chain, the feasibility of their implementation and their costs relative to their potential revenue.
The first draft of the studies is now available, and a peer review process of the document is proposed in the spirit of inclusiveness and transparency. All responses will be posted on the notification link (2024-048).
The draft study is accessible below. Access is provided on the condition that you agree to neither publish, air, or circulate any of these materials.
The Executive Summary of these compiled studies will be made available as an official document ahead of the second meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group on Benefit-sharing from the Use of Digital Sequence Information on Genetic Resources, and the full study will be provided as an information document. You may approach third parties for comment but only if they agree, in turn, to abide by the same restrictions.
By accessing the document you are agreeing to the aforementioned conditions. Reviewers encountering difficulty in accessing the draft can request an electronic copy be sent to them directly by sending an email to: secretariat@cbd.int.
